About Us

about-lama
Drepung Loseling Educational Society was established in the year 1995 with the sole object of providing rehabilitation and education, both classical and contemporary to the monk students.
Drepung Loseling Educational Society was registered under Karnataka Society Act.1960 DR/SOR/59/94-95. Its main objective is to provide rehabilitation and education both classical and contemporary to the monk students. It is also aimed at preserving traditional Buddhist tradition and culture. It strives to initiate all activities that promote overall development and growth of the society and its members.
The total monk population in this society at present is over 2500, out of which over 250 monks are from Himalayan belt including Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Bhutan and Nepal. The members of the society are spread over the 25 sub-divisions which can also be called hostels. Ideally speaking, each hostel houses monks from one particular region of Central Asia so that the monks, besides studying Buddhism in this Buddhist institute, could retain their mother tongue and regional affiliation throughout their long training period away from their home. The purpose of having such hostel is to ensure that the students could teach what they had learned in their native dialect when they eventually returned to their birthland.

Administration

The society consists of the following:

  1. Governing Board
  2. General Body
  3. Advisory Committee

The Governing Board comprising the president (the abbot of the monastery), two vice-presidents, a treasurer, three administrative members and a general secretary meet on regular basis for governing body meeting as per the memorandum of the association. All the members of the Governing Board are elected by general body. Except for the abbot-the president of society, who is directly chosen by His Holiness the Dalai Lama from the short-listed candidates elected by the general body, all other members of the governing board of the society are directly elected by the general body. The term for the abbot-president, preceptor and Lama Shunglenpa both vice-presidents is six years. While for the disciplinarian-vice-president and three administrators, their tenure is one year and three years respectively. Before expiry of their tenure or on resigning before the completion of their tenure, an election is held to appoint new members in place of outgoing members. Besides being principal executive authority of the society responsible for the general superintendant, direction and control of all the affairs of the society, the governing board has all such powers and can perform all such functions as are necessary or proper for the achievement or furtherance of the objectives of the Society. Both in the governing body meeting as well as in the General Body meeting, the president of the society acts as the chairman at all the meetings. In his absence, a senior amongst the two vice-presidents acts as the Chairman of that particular meeting. All the important matters of the society are brought up in the meeting for discussion and approval.

To manage the society efficiently, each administrator is assigned responsibility to look after particular departments of the society. Of the different units under the direct management of the administration, one administrator besides taking different roles in the administration, is entrusted with the responsibility of supervising and managing the monastic school. His duty is not only to ensure that the school runs smoothly but also to make sure that the school is provided all the facilities to achieve our common goal.
